2 day Trip with Aussie Snipper

Day 1:

We arrive to Bunutan Village, didnt waste any time and head staright to Cpatain House and had some tea and cofee and 15 min later we are on the Jukung heading to some of the reef spot. First 1 hour we were outsmart by Maori Seaperch and Bigeye Seabream aka MU. Change location and did more drift and again we were teased by the cheeky Maori Seaperch. Not long after Liam saw GT and land solid shot. It was his first GT.

Day 2:
The water Visibity was excellent, we start drifting and hopefully to some doggies or Spanish Mackerel. toward the end of the drift Kyle shot a good Size Spnaish Mackerel.

Second spot we also did a drift dive. we saw more Maori seaperch but not in the range of the Speargun. Toward the end of the Dive I saw Fish i have been waiting for all my life. Buffalo Emperor. The Emperor really made me wait for it in the bottom. But being properly hidden, staying still, minimizing movement Pay off. Shot the Buffalo Emperor and nail a solid shot. Was really stoke for my trophy fish!!

7 Day Trip with Liliana and Blaise

7 Day trip with Liliana and Blaise in North Bali and East Bali

We started in North Bali with Spearfishing, and doing some spearfishing training in the shallow waters of north bali where we could prepare our hunting skills befor the big game fishing in east bali we planned to do in the next 5 days.

 As we meet in the hotel where we had a quick briefing of what we are going to do the next few days and explained the plan of the whole trip and purpose and what we would be able to see during the next few days.

We do a full on gear briefing befor we jump into the adventure and how to use the guns, and get used to the equipment and how to properly handle it.

Then we started exploring the coast around north bali and after all the briefing we jumping into the water

Day 2

In the morning befor the spearfishing we have done a short breath-hold course for spearfishing to increase our chances and hunting abilities in the open water.

We started in the afternoon due to tidal movments so we have the best chances of catching fish and the good visibility.

That day we ended up catching a nice sized Bluefin trevally which they prepared in the restaurant later on for dinner.

Day 3

We meet at the Harbour to cross to East Bali with the ferry.

As we arrived we checked into our hotel and prepared all the gear for the boat so we are ready for the adventure.

We travel around east bali to find our good fishing spots and enjoying the views of the landscapes and ocean.

Day 4

We started early morning following the tides and went into few diffrent spots to have a high chance of shooting few fish,
that morning everything was going crazy and the jumped into the water and saw the fish jumping ontop of the surface and it was alot of excitment that day, the currents where not easy but we ended up with a beautiful catch for the end of the day we have been stalking fish and swimming alot for it.

Day 5

That day we will not forget because the experience of all the Dolphins and freediving with big Gts was awesome, we changed up few spots and went to checkout some freediving spots for the change of the trip.

Day 6

The beauty of spearfishing is that it can always be a big suprise and you never know what happens during the next dive, suddenly everything can change.
We went out during the afteroon and decided to come back abit later so we can see the sunset from the boat.

On the last spot we checked I dived down abit deeper and decided to have alook on the ledge and encoutnered a school of dogtooth tuna which i took the chance to shoot.

Later that day when we returned to the hotel we had the amazing experince to try the dogtooth sashimi , prepared for liliana and blaise that evening and everyone loved it because it was so fresh ,

we kept the fish on ice in our good kill bag that keep the fish fresh and good during the hot weather here in bali since we want to enjoy the catch to the fullest!!!

The days passed quickly and we had alot of fun.. spearfishing in the North and East and enjoying some of the freshess fish caught by ourselves.

When we started the dive the visibilty was amazing, i could see atleast 30-40 meter deep. Bait fish was greeting us and as soon as i see the rainbow runner i dive, but didn't see any Spanish Mackerel or wahoo, but as soon i swim up i saw a good size spanish heading passing me so i dive down again but i was on my last breath so i have to let it go and hopefully shoot it next time.

We did few long 1 hour drift but no sign of wahoo or Spanish mackerel. We saw lots of Unicorn fish but no sign of GT, or reef fish. Toward low tide the condition improve we started seing more life. Lots of rainbow runner and big school of unicorn fish. Not long after we start shooting the fish we came for. We got Wahoo and Spanish mackerel.

Spearfishing with Daniel Charles and his lovely wife: First time spearoto succesful hunter by the end of the day

Daniel and his wife took Freediving course in Gili in order to get themself ready to go spearfishing in Bali. Unfortunately the wife got food poisoning and need to cancel the second day of the course.

Daniel was really concern on his ability to be able to hunt in Bali. So the key to successful hunt is feeling comfortable underwater. This will lead to enjoying yourself spearfishing. In order to start being comfortable. We start by simple technique on how to duck dive, positiin yourself in bottom of the ocen floor and also to remain hidden, stealth and still. All this skill will help you land many type of fish. Daniel and his wife had no trouble learning and they all were natural. After 30 min of praticing and doing several drift dive they were confidence and feeling comfortable. Lastly, I  demostrated Daniel and his wife how to hunt snapper, showing how to approach them and take the  shot of Red snapper, successfully retrieve it to the surface.

The hunt begin and we start hunting for reef fish, Not long after we start shooting fish and Daniel successfully shot his first fish. He was amaze with disbelief that he can actually hunt and catch the fish. Not long after many more was caught.

Trip to an unknown destination.

Few months ago i've got a called by my friends wife, she asked if it would be a good present for his birthday  to send him over to Indonesia for some spearfishing with me, i didn't think much about and quickly answerd with a simple YES! We organised him a motorbike from "Bali Bike Rental" a Kawasaki KLX 150. Which arrived fine within our doorsteps deliverd by the serivce. We picked up our mate from the Airport at around 23:55, we got home, and we had a quick chat and debate when we should start driving, well I had the brilliant idea and said NOW !! which was at 2am at night.

We grabbed the ferry from Padang Bai at 3am, over to Lombok with our bikes loaded up totally with all our spearfishing gear. We Arrived on lombok at 10 AM in the morning, and started driving as fast as possible to cross over to Sumbawa. As we arrived to Sumbawa, i will skip the story and continue onwards with the arrival on the island, lets just say it took another 10hours to get there by bike + boat. (top secrets :D)

We arrived on the island after a 3h boatride , we shared a local boat with few Island locals that where really heartwarming welcoming us. As on arrival at around 5pm on the evening we decided to still gear up and head into the water to atleast get wet. As the sun started going down we have been losing daylight and decided to swim back to shore and prepare our beds. Our host family prepared us some food for the evening, it was all very fresh locally grown products cooked with so much love that we could't get enough, it was fish soup that night... SOOO DELICIOUS!!! And thats hard to describe as both Blake and Myself are chefs with experience from Michelin star kitchens. The goodness of flavours was a explosion!!!!!!

As the evening was passing we had to organise our boat, our local guide helped us and found a boatman and we had a meeting with him on the same evening, We had a chat and decided a price, so we packed our gear for the next morning and off we went to bed. As early as possible we woke up which was 5am, had some tea and a light breakfast, we had to carry our gear to the boat which was around 15minute walk from our homestay.

On the boat we had a crew of 2 deckhands, captian and guide that where helping us out with our gear, and plenty of deck space. We decided to head to the east of the Island as we had our Navionics App and checked out the ground on it.

And honestly everything looked good on it, as we arrived on the spot we jumped in and where fascinated by the crystal clear waters, even as we have been yesterday on our way to the Island , the vis around the island is like 30m + all the time... which is mind-blowing. We started diving to around 15m , and headed to some deeper drop offs 20-30m. But not knowing the currents and Island itself we mostly swam around just enjoing the freediving.

As we got onto on corner with some current suddenly the bait fishes rocked up underneath me, I dove down and spotted a school of bigeye trevalleys that was interested in me, but i didn't pull the trigger as i waited for something bigger (as usually haha). The drift ended soon and we decided to keep on going with the current to actually see as much ground as possible. After around 2h of drifing we decided to head to another Sea mount that was just around the corner , it was showing on the Navionics App that it comes up from 45m to 10/5m on the highest part, It was incoming hightide and you could drift above it.

We spotted a good corner with baitfish and decided to drop down there, on my first dive i've seen a bullshark and big ... really big rainbow runners, which all in all got me really excited and i continued drifting, on the last dive on that spot i've seen a spanish mackrel rocking up behind me so i used the techinques that Brett Levingston told me is his secrets in catching spanish mackrels and took a perfect body shot, that fish went crazy!!!!! It pulled the first float almost down, and just went ballistic in a circle. Which got the boat crew pumping and our guide that was watching from the boat. As fighting the fish we kept on drifting and the boat picked us up , everyoen was super exicited by the sight of a fish on the boat!! We started to get pumping!!!!

Quick break and off we went again to repeat the same drift, Im jumping in and Blake is following up, it was his turn to dive down, he went down on the same spot where we spotted the Rainbow runners, he dropped to about 22m and behind him was a HUUUGGEEEEE spanish , swimming around 3m away from him, but watching from the top, you cant yell at the diver below, it looked like he was focused on a diffrent fish down there since the spot looked really alive. On his way up he saw the mackrel in the distance and pointed at it. To notify me that its there.

We now knew that there is a dinosaur mackrel guarding its spot. Quickly we jumped back on the boat to repeat the drift. We dropped of further to have a better breath up and preperation for the drift, i decided to go to around 28m and check that Dinosaur out, as i started my decend down i spot the baitfish , i keep on dropping not looking into the left side but having a feeling that somehting is there, i have a quick look and i spot the beast, 20k of Spanish Mackrel swinning right infront of me, i do a quick turn and point my Rob Allen 140 at its body and off goes the shaft, perfect body-spine shot, the fish still gave a good fight, it pulled for around 5minutes before i could even think of lifting it up, in that time we already drifted over the reef. The boatcrew was following us and cheering, everyone was excited since this time the float went down for a short moment, as they pull up the fish we all see how big it acutally is. The whole team was stoked, and we knew that was it for the day and we want to head home, since we did lot of deep dives are we are really hungry and can't wait for our host-mom to be cooking.

We get onto shore and a group of kids is playing in the water,  their eyeballs dropped out by seeing the huge two spanish mackrels!!! Nobody waited long and helped us with our gear this time, we had a small pull car waiting for us, we packed up the fish into it and equipment and started pulling it back home, not an easy task after diving for around 7hours.

As we got home, we decided to quickly fillet the fish befor showering and other stuff so the hosts can share the whole fish with the village, it got split up into small bags so everyone gets something the family of the boatman and the crew and other fellow neighbours , it was amazing how a small community shares everyhing, we loved it, kids where coming to say thankyou and we got bombed with free coconuts!!! As the food was getting prepaired by the family the kids setup the fire. Everyone had a job, the teamwork was awesome!

We ended up eating and our bellys where full , the sleep came easy , off to bed the gear was already prepared for the next early morning which was also our departure. The next day we woke up early and got all our bags ready , we packed them on the boat and started heading out, we planned it that our captain will drop us off back to sumbawa, so we will spearfish on our way back.

We decided to stop at a reef where we had to ask the village chieftain to spearfish on, we paid a fee off 100.000 rupiah (10$ usd) and enjoyed the 40m visibilt and 25m deep drop offs filled with so much life... Coronational Trout's, Maori Seaperch and also groupers. That day we decided not to spear so much since we where not able to eat it or also give it away without the fish going bad from the travel times. So it was more of a discovery tour.

As we started getting exhausted we called it a day and decided to get prepared for the 3h hour steam home. As quickly as the journey began both of us have fallen asleep. The coolest fact about the location was that it had no reception or power during daytime. Only power at nighttime. Which gave it a special vibe. Our hosts where awesome and Im hoping to get back there soon to spear more fish.

Sumbawa Trip in April with the Hawaiian crew.

We have been asked by a group of Hawaiian guys to charter them a spearfishing trip around Lombok. After a quick chat we decided to go to Sumbawa due to better weather conditions and more flexibility in the fish species.

Starting Day

Sumbawa is around 8hours away by Car and FastBoat. And lots of waiting for all the transports. But currently one of the safest routs and only way to not spend lots of money on extra luggage cost in flying. Since we have been a group of 5 people.  All with super heavy spearfishing gear and filming + camera equipment we decided that we will take the car route which is Island hopping. We started at 6 in the Morning and met at the KFC in Sanur, we got picked up by the boat companies private car so we can fit all our gear in and don't be in the way of other travelling customers that would complain that we take to much spaces away, we almost didn't fit in.

We crossed Lombok, jumped over with the fast boat to Sumbawa and got picked up by the owner of Baha Baha Villas, Sean.  Quick 20 minute ride and we where in the Hotel, and waiting for our dinner. And the story exchanges began. Since Baha Baha was freshly opened up everyone was excited to be one of the first customers in the Villas. 

With our luck the power turned off for the first night, but the problem was solved in around 3 hours. Well we didn't expect an instant fix since we are in the Jungle and its OK if something runs out and simple you just gotta deal with it. 

We started to prepare our gear for tomorrow and packed our bags , went to bed early so we are fit for tomorrow. Everything was organised for the next day to go.

Day - 1 Arrival

We woke up at 6am and had a quick small breakfast so we have energy for the whole day in the boat and for the diving. Packed up the truck with all the bouys and spearguns and we sit in the back of the pick up and went for a ride to our location where the boatman was waiting for us. It was decided the night before that we are not going to go super hard out on the first day so we went to a Reef fishing spot where we hoped to find some snappers and Maori seaperch/ Spanish Mackrel / Trevallies. 

We started at a depth of 5-10m to warm ourselves up, we made team of 3 and 2 to stay safe, we swam against the current for a bit and then actually started drifting.  After a couple of minutes we spotted some Jobfish and Black Sand snappers, everyone had some practice shots and Justin and Hubert landed one each.

The rest was not so trigger happy since everyone was hoping for something big to pass by. We decided to swap the spot pretty soon and tried to find some GT’S we went to our GT spot and as soon as we arrived we saw how rough it was.

Despite the weather conditions , we gave it a try and jumped into the water. Since we know that Giant Trevallys like it with some white was on the side of the coast. The depth was abit deeper around 15-30m was the hunting range. I’ve spotted a big spanish Mackrel on my first drop to 21m but as i was on the way up, i didn't decide to do a turn. Told the guys up top to drop down and have a look and give it a try. But the Mackrel was a bit shy.

After spending around 2hours trying for GT’s we drifted with the current around the corner and tried to hunt for other reef and pelagic species. Close to 7hours in the water and not much success we decided to go home, we did end up with caught fish and a happy finished first day.

In Baha Baha we had our chef taking care of the fish and he actually filleted it and made us prefect indonesian curry with it. - Delicious  After we had dinner , its was the only way - off to bed , get well rested and get ready for another 6 am wake up call.

Day 2 Spearing Madness

Packed the Pick-up-truck and off we went to Maluk which is 20 minutes drive of the hotel to our boatman. Loaded up the boat and we headed for some bigger pelagic.

On our arrival the water looked bit murky , we jumped in and stayed at the spot. It was quite active, on my jump in and drift with the current i managed to load the gun , done my first dive and spotted a nice sized Bluefin trevally, and managed to land it. The hopes of the whole team went up so everyone started to get into a nice hunting mood.

We kept on dropping deep to around 30m (100feet) to spot nice sized fish, our main priority have been dogtooth tuna and GT’S. Justin Baluch dropped down on the flasher and managed to shot a nice rusty job fish, which is well worth a trophy and a good tick off the list.

After him i’ve went down and spotted few Dogtooth tuna , managed to shot a small one around 8kg and we got pumped to hunt, Justin Mack decided to go down and have a go, he dropped to around 25-30m / 75-100feet and actually managed to spot a bigger doggie, but it didn't want to come close so he didn't go for a shot. That day was full of action, soon on my next dive I've spotted a school of African Pompanos and managed to land TWO in separated dives.

The Sashimi for that day was sorted!!! We had Bluefin trevally , African Pompano and Dogtooth tuna, which was delicious that day,  after so many deep dives you definitely love some good food, especially when its caught by your group! Hard earned dinner. Thats why we go and spearfish!

Day 3 Relaxed Freediving

We’r on the boat and the conditions at the spot we wanted to go didn't look so good so we headed to another place, we did few dives and couldn't find much. So we kept on moving around, but that day was pretty average , spotted many GT’s but they haven't been coming close or been super shy , maybe it was the excitement that kept on scaring them away. We did end up having food, and a good day diving. It was rather a quite diving day, and the fish we really spooky. So we called it pretty quick and also decided that we are going to take a day off and rest on the next day.

Day 4 Motorbike Madness

On that day everyone slept in , we started our breakfast and decided what we’r gonna do, we borrowed the Motorbikes of Baha Baha Villas and head out with Indra Pastra the local spearfishing legend and professional tour guide for a run out into the jungle to do a short sight seeing and to jump off some waterfalls.

Our way was to see some cliffs and check the nature out , we started driving and had super fun on the way there , you know what happen when you put 6 guys on Motorbikes and let them drive around on endless empty roads. hahaha!!! We had go-pros out and filming our pure madness runs. Arrived at our destination and shot some pics, watches the nature do its things the cliffs were awesome.

After around 30 minutes of cliff staring , we started heading back and shot few pictures on the way back. Which turned out awesome having a professional photographer with you pays out, Justin Mack does some amazing shots and he's super talented.

As soon as we arrived back at Baha Baha we had a quick lunch and decided to head of to the waterfalls at around 13:00 which was a kinda catchy decision.

On the way to the waterfalls i went through a puddle of mud on the offload bike and lost the chain , luckly indra my best local friend took care of that issue and called the mechanic to fix it!! so we continued to the waterfalls by ourselves. The walk was around 30minutes into the jungle following the water noise, it was going up hill , which ended up in quite a exercise on our rest day.

Arriving to the waterfalls we looked up a spotted a group of locals grilling some fish right next to the waterfall. To bed our young generations don’t do such things these days.

We started doing some jumps into the water from the rocks as the locals showed us where to actually jump in. It was an around 8m jump at it was a pure adrenaline kick as done for the first time!  Shortly after the whole waterfall fun we headed back to Baha Baha and enjoyed another amazing fish dinner, ping pong and lots of fun stories. And as every evening we decided to make a new plan for tomorrow on where were going to hit the sea!

Day 5 

We decided to not make it such a long day since we have been spearing awhile and got one more day to go, so we went to our GT spot we started shallow , and went deeper. With not much luck during the day, only few small fish, a small Golden Trevally and a job fish as sashimi.  I spotted few Giant Trevallys by the end of the day but they have not been interested in coming close, also there was rain chasing us so we decided to call it earlier then expected.

Day 6 Special Suprise 

That was one special day..... The night before we decided on what we would like to do, 2 of us said that they are going to enjoy the land for abit and stayed at home. Vikram and Shane decided to give it another go on the last day of the Sumbawa trip.

So we left to the Harbour and on the spot waiting for the boat, the boatman called us and said that his engine wont start up... we thought that we are doomed and our hopes where low, but luckly the King of Hospitality of Sumbawa THE man, Indra did few phone calls and said that he knows someone with a boat that would take us if we share the fish with him. So without long of a deciding we called it a GO! We left the harbour , drove 30minutes to Indras friends place, carried the engine on the boat, bought the fuel... everything was pretty hectic because we saw big black clouds rocking up that where just behind the village we left. So we hurried up , heartbeats pumping because we know that there is just one time frame in this special day to catch some fish.  Due to that moon phase we wanted to be exactly at that time in the water, and not later.

Luckly we managed to make it 10 minutes prior to our peak time in the water on the spot. We had no chance to warm up the current was pumping, we sorted ourselves our pretty quick and stayed in one spot that was protected from the current, one after another we started diving. Each dive we started noticing more and more fish where coming up and are interested from Rusty job fish  to Green Job fish, small Bluefin trevallys but nothing really in size. Suddenly 8 minutes past peak time the water changed its colour, like some sort of magical moment. I dived down to around 25m and spotted Rainbow runners , i did not bother shooting after around a 25second bottom time i started coming back up and in the left corner i spotted few doggies crusing below the rainbows.

I went up and said to Vikram to go down , he went down to about 15m and Shane and I just heard a shot and saw a quick sliver flash. I thought he shot a rainbow runner because the floats had no pull on , nothing was moving... on the way up you could see his smile , as soon as he surfaced he yells out” OH MY GOD I FREAKING STONED IT, I FREAKING STONED IT” we where excited and knew with the reaction that i was a healthy dogtooth tuna worth 10KG. The whole group of us was so excited that we didn't notice the coming up clouds of rain and bad weather, we quickly loaded the Dogtooth on the boat and called it a day due to raising swell... managed to carry the boat back up the beach and relax for abit. While waiting for the pickup. Indra called up and asked if the got anything, just to play up a game we said that we didn't even see a fish.

As soon as he came to pick us up in the dripping rain , he spotted the fin sticking out of the esky. And laughed “hahah you guys are stinky liars”  We then headed back to Baha Baha , where Justin Mack and Justin Baluch where chilling out and doing some bintangs, we didn't carry the esky in first. Pretending that we didn't catch anything and walked in quite sad, they asked “Did you guys get anything?” Vikram looked at Justin M, and went from a sort of Sad face to a screaming “YEA MAN WE GOT A DOGTOOTH TUNA” , they didn’t believe us , everyone was sceptic on that point until he showed them the doggie, everyone was screaming and high-fiving each other, we where so pumped that we got it, due to such a bad start. Luckly we didn't let those issues put our heads down and moved on with each opportunity that rocked up and just solved the problems.

On that evening we enjoyed some more fresh doggie sashimi, shared it with the man that helped us with the boat and the staff of Baha Baha, as everything worked out well that day, that fish was such hard work it even tasted better then usual!! 

As the night finished we packed up our bags for departure on the next morning at 6:30am. Thats how few days spend in a magical spot ended up being a super fun trip , with spectacular views , stories, fun time and of course strong new friendships from another side of the world.
