7 Day trip with Liliana and Blaise in North Bali and East Bali

We started in North Bali with Spearfishing, and doing some spearfishing training in the shallow waters of north bali where we could prepare our hunting skills befor the big game fishing in east bali we planned to do in the next 5 days.

 As we meet in the hotel where we had a quick briefing of what we are going to do the next few days and explained the plan of the whole trip and purpose and what we would be able to see during the next few days.

We do a full on gear briefing befor we jump into the adventure and how to use the guns, and get used to the equipment and how to properly handle it.

Then we started exploring the coast around north bali and after all the briefing we jumping into the water

Preparation

Day 2

In the morning befor the spearfishing we have done a short breath-hold course for spearfishing to increase our chances and hunting abilities in the open water.

Liliana did 2 amazing minutes and Blaise did amazing 3minutes in the morning!!

We started in the afternoon due to tidal movments so we have the best chances of catching fish and the good visibility.

That day we ended up catching a nice sized Bluefin trevally which they prepared in the restaurant later on for dinner.

Day 3

We meet at the Harbour to cross to East Bali with the ferry.

As we arrived we checked into our hotel and prepared all the gear for the boat so we are ready for the adventure.

We travel around east bali to find our good fishing spots and enjoying the views of the landscapes and ocean.

Day 4

We started early morning following the tides and went into few diffrent spots to have a high chance of shooting few fish,
that morning everything was going crazy and the jumped into the water and saw the fish jumping ontop of the surface and it was alot of excitment that day, the currents where not easy but we ended up with a beautiful catch for the end of the day we have been stalking fish and swimming alot for it.

Day 5

That day we will not forget because the experience of all the Dolphins and freediving with big Gts was awesome, we changed up few spots and went to checkout some freediving spots for the change of the trip.

Day 6

The beauty of spearfishing is that it can always be a big suprise and you never know what happens during the next dive, suddenly everything can change.
We went out during the afteroon and decided to come back abit later so we can see the sunset from the boat.

On the last spot we checked I dived down abit deeper and decided to have alook on the ledge and encoutnered a school of dogtooth tuna which i took the chance to shoot.

Later that day when we returned to the hotel we had the amazing experince to try the dogtooth sashimi , prepared for liliana and blaise that evening and everyone loved it because it was so fresh ,

we kept the fish on ice in our good kill bag that keep the fish fresh and good during the hot weather here in bali since we want to enjoy the catch to the fullest!!!

The days passed quickly and we had alot of fun.. spearfishing in the North and East and enjoying some of the freshess fish caught by ourselves.



Trip with Liliana and Blaise 5- 11th of August Guided by Hubert.

Trip to an unknown destination.

Few months ago i've got a called by my friends wife, she asked if it would be a good present for his birthday  to send him over to Indonesia for some spearfishing with me, i didn't think much about and quickly answerd with a simple YES! We organised him a motorbike from "Bali Bike Rental" a Kawasaki KLX 150. Which arrived fine within our doorsteps deliverd by the serivce. We picked up our mate from the Airport at around 23:55, we got home, and we had a quick chat and debate when we should start driving, well I had the brilliant idea and said NOW !! which was at 2am at night.

We grabbed the ferry from Padang Bai at 3am, over to Lombok with our bikes loaded up totally with all our spearfishing gear. We Arrived on lombok at 10 AM in the morning, and started driving as fast as possible to cross over to Sumbawa. As we arrived to Sumbawa, i will skip the story and continue onwards with the arrival on the island, lets just say it took another 10hours to get there by bike + boat. (top secrets :D)

We arrived on the island after a 3h boatride , we shared a local boat with few Island locals that where really heartwarming welcoming us. As on arrival at around 5pm on the evening we decided to still gear up and head into the water to atleast get wet. As the sun started going down we have been losing daylight and decided to swim back to shore and prepare our beds. Our host family prepared us some food for the evening, it was all very fresh locally grown products cooked with so much love that we could't get enough, it was fish soup that night... SOOO DELICIOUS!!! And thats hard to describe as both Blake and Myself are chefs with experience from Michelin star kitchens. The goodness of flavours was a explosion!!!!!!

As the evening was passing we had to organise our boat, our local guide helped us and found a boatman and we had a meeting with him on the same evening, We had a chat and decided a price, so we packed our gear for the next morning and off we went to bed. As early as possible we woke up which was 5am, had some tea and a light breakfast, we had to carry our gear to the boat which was around 15minute walk from our homestay.

On the boat we had a crew of 2 deckhands, captian and guide that where helping us out with our gear, and plenty of deck space. We decided to head to the east of the Island as we had our Navionics App and checked out the ground on it.

And honestly everything looked good on it, as we arrived on the spot we jumped in and where fascinated by the crystal clear waters, even as we have been yesterday on our way to the Island , the vis around the island is like 30m + all the time... which is mind-blowing. We started diving to around 15m , and headed to some deeper drop offs 20-30m. But not knowing the currents and Island itself we mostly swam around just enjoing the freediving.

As we got onto on corner with some current suddenly the bait fishes rocked up underneath me, I dove down and spotted a school of bigeye trevalleys that was interested in me, but i didn't pull the trigger as i waited for something bigger (as usually haha). The drift ended soon and we decided to keep on going with the current to actually see as much ground as possible. After around 2h of drifing we decided to head to another Sea mount that was just around the corner , it was showing on the Navionics App that it comes up from 45m to 10/5m on the highest part, It was incoming hightide and you could drift above it.

We spotted a good corner with baitfish and decided to drop down there, on my first dive i've seen a bullshark and big ... really big rainbow runners, which all in all got me really excited and i continued drifting, on the last dive on that spot i've seen a spanish mackrel rocking up behind me so i used the techinques that Brett Levingston told me is his secrets in catching spanish mackrels and took a perfect body shot, that fish went crazy!!!!! It pulled the first float almost down, and just went ballistic in a circle. Which got the boat crew pumping and our guide that was watching from the boat. As fighting the fish we kept on drifting and the boat picked us up , everyoen was super exicited by the sight of a fish on the boat!! We started to get pumping!!!!

Quick break and off we went again to repeat the same drift, Im jumping in and Blake is following up, it was his turn to dive down, he went down on the same spot where we spotted the Rainbow runners, he dropped to about 22m and behind him was a HUUUGGEEEEE spanish , swimming around 3m away from him, but watching from the top, you cant yell at the diver below, it looked like he was focused on a diffrent fish down there since the spot looked really alive. On his way up he saw the mackrel in the distance and pointed at it. To notify me that its there.

We now knew that there is a dinosaur mackrel guarding its spot. Quickly we jumped back on the boat to repeat the drift. We dropped of further to have a better breath up and preperation for the drift, i decided to go to around 28m and check that Dinosaur out, as i started my decend down i spot the baitfish , i keep on dropping not looking into the left side but having a feeling that somehting is there, i have a quick look and i spot the beast, 20k of Spanish Mackrel swinning right infront of me, i do a quick turn and point my Rob Allen 140 at its body and off goes the shaft, perfect body-spine shot, the fish still gave a good fight, it pulled for around 5minutes before i could even think of lifting it up, in that time we already drifted over the reef. The boatcrew was following us and cheering, everyone was excited since this time the float went down for a short moment, as they pull up the fish we all see how big it acutally is. The whole team was stoked, and we knew that was it for the day and we want to head home, since we did lot of deep dives are we are really hungry and can't wait for our host-mom to be cooking.

We get onto shore and a group of kids is playing in the water,  their eyeballs dropped out by seeing the huge two spanish mackrels!!! Nobody waited long and helped us with our gear this time, we had a small pull car waiting for us, we packed up the fish into it and equipment and started pulling it back home, not an easy task after diving for around 7hours.

As we got home, we decided to quickly fillet the fish befor showering and other stuff so the hosts can share the whole fish with the village, it got split up into small bags so everyone gets something the family of the boatman and the crew and other fellow neighbours , it was amazing how a small community shares everyhing, we loved it, kids where coming to say thankyou and we got bombed with free coconuts!!! As the food was getting prepaired by the family the kids setup the fire. Everyone had a job, the teamwork was awesome!

We ended up eating and our bellys where full , the sleep came easy , off to bed the gear was already prepared for the next early morning which was also our departure. The next day we woke up early and got all our bags ready , we packed them on the boat and started heading out, we planned it that our captain will drop us off back to sumbawa, so we will spearfish on our way back.

We decided to stop at a reef where we had to ask the village chieftain to spearfish on, we paid a fee off 100.000 rupiah (10$ usd) and enjoyed the 40m visibilt and 25m deep drop offs filled with so much life... Coronational Trout's, Maori Seaperch and also groupers. That day we decided not to spear so much since we where not able to eat it or also give it away without the fish going bad from the travel times. So it was more of a discovery tour.

As we started getting exhausted we called it a day and decided to get prepared for the 3h hour steam home. As quickly as the journey began both of us have fallen asleep. The coolest fact about the location was that it had no reception or power during daytime. Only power at nighttime. Which gave it a special vibe. Our hosts where awesome and Im hoping to get back there soon to spear more fish.

Unforgettable Trip to an known but yet untouched location.

Well it all begane pretty unplaned, my best mate and me have been sitting at home one night after a hard day at work and decided that we should do a Holiday in Indonesia and do some spearfishing in crystal clear blue water of the Archiplego and go on some crazy adventures, as impulsive as we are we booked our tickets to Indonesia, 3 weeks full on spearing (that was the plan).

We airrved in Kuta, spend a night there since its one of the most touristy spots in Bali we tried to get out of it as fast as possible.

On arrival day we already organised tickets to Gili Trawangan to start with some freediving practice around the gilis. We got a good deal at "The Secret Garden Hotel"
It is not on the beach front but just a 2minute walk from inside the Village, we got a twin bed room for 250k each per night including Aircon and TV and a good DVD collection.
Despite the fact that the Spearfishing around the Gilis is not as good as it used to be due to the overflow of "Scuba-Dive-schools" and the noisy regulators on the reefs the fish are pretty much sitting in deep water, around 40-50m.
If your capable of diving to those depths, you will enjoy spearfishing around the Gilis. Back then we did not have the skills to those dephts.


The good positive thing about the Gilis was that there is enough turtels around to snap pictures of, and get your freediving skills back up befor the proper spearfishing in Lombok.

We booked our tickets from Gili T to Sengiggi and took a car ride to Kuta Lombok.

The whole trip with our spearfishing gear was a mission, it didnt fit into the bus since we shared it with few other tourists that where on their way too. After everyone squeezed in with the speargun bags between our heads we rolled out.

Arriving in Kuta, we stayed outside the village at a "Friend of a Friends" place, the price was good the room was including motorbikes so we could move around, we didnt pay straight away, we said we pay when we will want to leave so we can spontanously decide if we wanna hit another location.

We took our bikes and teamed up with some Local lombok spearfisherman to go to "Unteng Unteng"

at Selongblanak Beach which is around 30minutes ride to the west from Lombok Kuta.

The ride was in a local Jukung,
around 45minutes from the beach there is a sea-mount rising from around 45m to 5m underwater. and you can see the currents passing by.
As we where sitting on the boat we could see GT's smashing the bait, which got us really excited!!

We landed few good fish, good sized golden trevallys our camers went out of battery after a whole day hunting, so we didnt manage to snap any shots of the fish out of water... always prepare a spare battery for a trip.











After the spearfishing we made our way back home in our wetsuites because it was raining.
now that we made this decision saved the whole trip for me!!!
On the way back we had to cross a mountain with around a 15% way down,
on the way down my back tire of the scooter lost controll on some wet gravel and i slided around 100 meters on the floor and the scooter into the side of the road, luckly there was enough trees that did HOLD me and the motorbike off the cliff side!!

Blake was behind me and saw everyhing happening, the spearguns got damaged on the side of the motorbike. THE WETSUIT saved all my skin and i had no wounds, whatsoever. The bike got damaged badly.
Blake thought i fell down the cliffs because he couldn't see me in the bush stuck on the trees, and he panicked and yelled my name. I guess he was pretty shocked, few other backpackers stopped and started looking for me, since i had a camoflage wetsuit on it was hard to see me in the trees and it took me few seconds to realise what happend. I stood up and yelled that im OK!! I walked up and shook it off and the first thing i said was : "I hope my spearguns are ok" ... Blake wanted to smash my face for that one... since the fall looked pretty deadly.
We headed back to a local motorbike garage to fix it up for 50k which took around one hour.

After that fall Im sure im not gonna drive down wet hills anymore with a rented scooter. So let this be a warning.
We fell to bed and planned the next day, it was time to go to Gerupuk!!

Gerupuk is a small village east of Kuta Lombok, pretty known surfspot but it has some good spearfishing outside the bay, we spend just few hours there due to bad weather conditions and only managed to land some parrot fish to not stay hungry that night.



After Gerupuk we got told to contact a GUY called INDRA PASTRA
A LOCAL SUMBAWA legend,
and we asked our guy at the homestay to book a car to Sekongkang.
It was pretty weird since he said his cousing is going to drive us, to Sekongkang but yea,
we jump into the car and get to Labuhan... and he just dropped us off there with our bags, in the rain...... at this side of lombok nobody speaks english. Yup we'r stuck in the middle of no-where.

Yup, thats how i felt.

So we managed to explain with our hands and feet how to get to SKK.
Some dude said that we need to take the bus over there, we turned our heads around and looked at a fully stuffed bus, the roof was basically as high as the bus itself.
After a small debate we decided to say yes and paid around 300k each to get on that bus.
Which was ment to go to SKK.

After 4h ride on that bus including a Island hop from Lombok to Sumbawa.
They dropped us of in Taliwang... at around 6pm at night. The bus's last stop. hahahahah!!! Yea right, rice fields and nothing else around.
So we look around and everyone tried to take us on their bikes to SKK for 400k each on a motorbike, with all our spearfishing gear. Apprently its close, we did not take the risk.
We spotted two guys sitting in a small pickup truck that would fit our gear perfectly.
We went over and spoke to them with our body languauge we managed to get a ride to SKK for 500k each (total rip-off) but yea thats the way
.
The car had few holes and we had to stop to cool it down around 5 times.
We finally made it to SKK and stayed at YoYos beach resort.

At the bungalow, after the total  stressed day and emptied out pockets from being bargaind :D.


Well we arrived , it was time to meet Indra,
we asked him to go spearfishing for the next day, he said cool well go, shore dive off the beach towards the GT house.
Indra landed a BEAST Maori Seaperch !!

That was an around 45minute swim with the floats in the back and the current in the wrong direction, but it was worth a go. We havent been successfull at that point , the current was abit ripping and we where tired out from the trip. So we decided to call it after 4h of spearing and made our swim back in the waves.

Took a rest for the rest of the day and slept well.

The day after we decided to go chase some doggies from the boat,
We got on the boat and started spearing at the spot, after around 50 dives i've spotted a big doggie at 15m depth, but i was way to far away with my 145 gun back then. and the fish was approx 50kg+ i fired the gun and the slip tip did not engage. I was pretty upset.
I reloded my gun and went down for another dive.

I spot to dark shades coming up to me from around 25m so i stayed calm and waited for them to come up, and i see two BIG GT's coming up, the front one was really dark so i decide to take the shot at it as it turns sideways and i land a good upper spine shot, the fish goes for a small run!!

I yelled to blake to dive down and land a second shot to save the catch incase it would go nuts again!!

 It was a fish of a lifetime, around 33KG in pure fighting mode, beast of a fish!!
That was one of our last days in SKK. and we enjoyed every moment of it.
We had beach barbeques with our caught fish down the beach, talked to passing by surfers that just joined the fire and we had music going too, a special night in the night skies of SKK and a enjoyable meal caught by few spearos.

That was an amazing trip, the logistics where hard but we did manage everything and made new friends.

All in all a very successfull trip where most things turned out well and fun.
