3 Day Spearfishing adventure with Anthony Hierro

myself and Anthony been discussing the trip few month ago and we both agree 3 day trip is best way to experience most of what Bali Underwater world have to offer.

Day 1 we went to North Bali to Hunt at the drop off reef. We manage to see few 5 star reef fish but it was a challenge to shoot them. One of my dive a school of 5-15 kg Giant trevally, I waited to see if there a nice trophy fish in the schoo but didnt see any. We drift with the current and saw big Midnight snapper, Redbass, Mori Seaperch and Bigeye Seabream but the current was not in our favor we couldn't hide on any spot to get them closer.
The next spot we shot a good size Dogtooth Tuna , midnight snapper and Bluefin Trevally. It was good enough for the first day to have a good dinner. At night we have Dogtooth Caviche and midnight snapper pepes and sate.

The next day we went to Different spot and shot mangrove jack, Anthony miss a good size Spanish mackerel, we also got bluefin trevally and Giant Trevally. We also got Bigeye Sebream toward the end of the dive. We had another feast for Dinner at Anthony hotel, the owner prepare us amazing dinner.

Last day was epic. Never saw so many Spanish mackerel in one day. Firt spot we saw some GT and Spnaish mackerel but they kept their distance. The next spot John Shot Spanish mackerel, it was quiet murky and hard to spot them but john got lucky one spanish went straight toward him from underneath. The next spot we hunt at the reef and Anthony shot a good size flowery cod.  The next spot it was a war zone. I spotted a school of Spanish mackerel all around 10-15 kg size. Took a shot a miss. Not long after john got one and wahoo following after. Then Anthony finally got his first spanish mackerel after losing his first one the day before.

Epic Spearfishing trip with Legendary Brodie moss from YoungbloodSpearfishing

We all were happy that we have created a new Friendship between Spearo who enjoy and passionate of being in the water. We all believe that there is positive and negative impact toward spearfishing snd we promise each other that we will send the correct message to all the spears around the world to become a responsible diver. We met day before the trip discussing the possibility to go spearfishing and we connect so well that we decide to go out the next day and hunt in our backyard.

We went to East Bali and it was an epic Day. Broodie shot Barramundi cod, then not long after I shot wahoo, the next spot Hubert shot. Giant Trevally and last spot before we finish I shot 15 kg Group.

After the trip we went back Komune to Broodie Hotel and ate the Delicious Barramundi cod. The chef cooked it so well , it was amazing.

We met few time after the trip to have few beer and Hubert went out with Broodie and both of them got lucky hunting in the land. Til next trip Brother!

Weekend in East bali

First day dive at the Rumpon (FAD) no luck seing any pelagic fish. I visited 20 Rumpon and the Visibility was poor. I shot few amberjack for the captain dinner and I give up.

The next day we went to the reef and try a new spot with pontential spanish mackerel but the area was protected by a village. so i kept a my distance from the area and hoping something will pass by but no luck.

Then I headed to the usual spot and saw few emperor but my bottom time was a mess. I couldn't stay long enough to wait for the emperor to get close. Instead i shot a good size grouper. The next spot is perfect  when the sun is almost set and the current is strong. All the big boys are hunting for bait fish.

I saw a giant grouper but it sprint like there is no tommorow. Saw more emperor but i miss the shot. Toward the end of my dive I reached  my favorite hiding spot next to a big rock. It took me 2 dive and the familiar sound of a big predator fish is coming and the fish started to scatter. 2 big bluefin trevally swim closer and closer to my direction. Took the shot at the biggest one and secure the fish quickly because i was surrounded by big rocks and reef.

Then i try to find the other big guy but no luck and I call it a day. When i head back the local boys are ready with rice and sambal and the grill to cook the fish.

Unexpected Hunting success in Bali

The view before the Dive
A few days ago Eenk decided to try a new spot that he heard marvelous stories about it from the local villager. He heard tales about the good old days, when fish flourished and were abandoned on their doorsteps. Eenk will try anything even if the water is infested with crocodiles! Unfortunately I couldn't go because I had a bad flu; Bali weather has lately been very unforgiving to me and my family at home.

It didn't take Eenk too long to start with some action; how he described the day was hard to believe; the Visibility was 3-4 M and the depth 5-7 M. The fish were approaching him in a close distance, from every directions, and it didn't stop until the next hour.

Like usually barramundi do, they would approach you slowly and sometime you cannot tell the size if the fish is heading to you head to head. As soon as it turns you will be surprised by the size and make sure that you take a good shot at the fish.  You will also find barramundi hiding between rocks and not moving much. The smaller size barramundi will come in school and they don't waste time, so do not wait for the biggest one because they will disappear in a glimpse!

The hunt was successful with a long list of catch:
  • Mangrove jack 5 3-4 kg size,
  • 1 Baramundi 6 kg and
  • 1 Grouper 7 kg,
  • Bream 10 1-2 kg size
  •  5 rabbit fish .5 -1.5 kg.

Arvid, Eenk and I wanted to try our luck and we went to the same location a week afterwards. The water visibility was the same and the fish scattered because it was high tide. However, we managed to bring back a 5 kg grouper, a 6 kg mangrove jack and big smiles on our faces back home!

6-8 January 2012 Baluran trip

First day in Baluran the water is merky, so i wasted a lot of dive for nothing. Luckly there was 2 1 kg mangrove jack that made my day,and 1 small one. also shot a grouper. I couldnt shoot any 5 kg grouper because they run and hide no matter what. i also couldn't get close to few different kind of  trevally. There was a huge school of small amberjack and pomfret but i didn't even bother to shoot.

The next day i am not sure whether the hangover is affecting my dive or bad luck i am not sure. i also shoot the gun twice the whole day. Saw more trevally, grouper and mangrove jack but no luck and getting a good range to shoot.

The last day we went to different spot. Swim with sea turtle for a bit and then start looking for fish. but this spot is worst from all the new spot we explore. No fish at all and merky water.
Dinner mangrove jack

Well the highlight of the trip arvid manage to take a lot of nice wildlife photo in national park, amazing bbq and never ending supply of beer Bintang.
